Tennyson as a Representative of Victorian period

Tennyson {1809-1892} occupies a unique position in the history of English Literature in its transition from the Romantic age to Victorian period. " Grierson" calls him "the heir of Romantic Revival" by virtue of the age and because of his own sensibility and imagination. In the words of "W.J. Long" Tennyson is "probably the most representative of  literary man of Victorian Era". His work is an authentic epitome of all the important features of his age. In his poetry he kept pace with changing times. Tennyson and Browning are regarded as the third generation of romantic poets. The new poetry of Tennyson imbued with the spirit of Romanticism. He is most prominent an representative of rhythm and there is an exquisite and varied music in his verse. Tennyson even copied Keats in his use of color images. Poems like The Lady  of  Shalott , Recollection of  Arabian Nights , and Mariana show romantic touches and influences. His short poems Break Break Break , Tears Idle Tears and Crossing the Bar represent distinct music , imagery and are regarded as finest song. Tennyson's poetic sensibility walked with a common-place intellect. Tennyson's poetry depicts the intellectual and spiritual life of his time. His masterpiece In Memoriam  is a good example of Victorian crisis of faith. Use of myth is seen in poems like The Charge of the Light Brigade , Ulysses , Idylls of the King . Tennyson was a great poet who tried his hand at a variety of forms from Elegy to Dramatic Monologue.
